Healthy Horse Snacks

We all love to spoil our horses, there is no doubt about it! One of my favorite things to do is shop for and try out new treats. However, I discovered an issue with my massive treat collection- the amount of sugar in a single treat. Now, sugary treats are not bad for horses in moderation. But when you’re like me feeding four (at least!)  treats each visit, you can up your horse’s sugar intake by quit a bit. I decided I needed to find a healthier treat alternative that my boy would still love. I tried out this recipe, and it is his new favorite snack!


  • One banana
  • Lemon juice
  • Water


Preheat your oven to 250 degrees. Next, chop up your banana into thin slices, about 1/4 inches thick. Then mix equal parts lemon juice and water in a bowl. Put your banana slices into the mixture, and stir it lightly, making sure each slice is coated.


Next, fork out each slice individually and set them on a non stick pan. Leave space in between each slice, or they will stick together!


Then you’re ready to go! Just place them in the oven, and bake for 2 to 2 1/2 hours. They should be brown and crispy, but not burnt. Once they are cooked to perfection, allow them to cool for a bit before removing them from the pan.


Now enjoy! I hope your horses enjoy these delicious treats as much as mine does.




  1. This is such a simple and smart idea! I am ALWAYS checking the amounts of sugar in treats and have the hardest time finding ones that I can give to Lady due to her metabolic issues. I’ll have to give this a shot and see what she thinks!
